3.1(f) Panel interviews
Using more than one interviewer has many advantages:
- There is more than one opinion going into this important decision.
- One person may miss or forget details.
- You can use someone with knowledge of the technical aspects of the role with someone experienced in interviewing (for example, from the human resources department).
- You can use both a male and a female or represent any minority groups if relevant, thus aiding equal opportunity.
The disadvantage is that sometimes the candidate will be more nervous and that the cost is greater as you are taking more than one person from their regular duties.
If using a panel to interview, adhere to these guidelines:
- Ensure that you know your roles. Mark on the interview sheet who is to say what.
- When asking questions, look at the candidate, not at each other.
- Ensure that there is minimal discussion between members of the panel during the interview.
