2.3 Selection panel
Who will you invite to be on your selection panel or will you be the only person doing this? Many organisations use a selection panel to assist in the selection process. Regardless of who you include, all participants should be selected on the basis of the skills and attributes needed to achieve the various objectives of the selection interview. Your selection panel will;
- Represent the organisation
- Gather information from candidates
- Assess candidates
They will need to;
- Be observant of candidate
- Have skill with words
- Be open minded
- Be non conforming and independent
Your selection panel should consist of at least 2, preferably 3 people. Generally you would have a coordinator who assumes overall responsibility for the operation of the panel.
The members of the panel would normally be;
- HR representative
- Line Manager
- Independent participant.
- Made up of both male & female representatives
- At least one member formally trained in selection techniques.
- In a higher position than the position in question
Your chosen panel will be responsible for ensuring the best available applicant is recommended for appointment according to the selection criteria.
They will assist you in;
- Determining a short list of candidates to move to interview.
- Developing selection tests, including interview questions
- Ensuring interview questions and other selection tests are linked to selection criteria
- Ensuring there is a balance of question that reflects the importance and weighting of the selection criteria.
- Developing tools for assessing responses to questions or tests
- Preparing the final selection report.
