Understanding YouTube

What is YouTube?

If a picture can tell a thousand words, then a video can tell a hundred thousand.  YouTube is a free video-sharing site and social network.   It allows users to share, watch and comment on videos. 

Why use YouTube for teaching and learning?

YouTube is the third most visited site on the intranet, after Google and Facebook.  The average internet user spends 900 seconds per day on YouTube.

Many of the videos on YouTube have been posted for educational purposes, and its wealth of video clips makes for an extensive video library.  Teachers and students can also post videos.
