Learning Topic 2    Follow the organisation’s policies and practices

This topic should provide you with the ability to identify your responsibilities as a community services worker and work within the boundaries and limitations of your role. You will learn to:

  • accept responsibility for your own actions;
  • seek agreement with the client, where possible, prior to providing services;
  • work within organisational policies, protocols and procedures;
  • contribute to the review and development of policies and protocols; and
  • work within position specifications and role responsibilities and seek clarification when you are unsure of responsibilities or instructions.

Topic Review

The role of policy and procedures in ensuring an effective workplace is where CSI workers understand their roles and responsibilities.  We have focused on how to work within the policies and procedures of an organisation as well as contribute to the ongoing development and review of policy and procedures.  We looked a little more closely at some of the key areas of policy and procedures, such as establishing clear guidelines around the issue of accepting the client into the service and how policy and procedures can be applied in the workplace to make decisions when we are unsure of how to proceed (such as in a conflict situation).

The clearer you are about what is expected of you in the workplace and what guidelines you need to follow, the more effective, focused and comfortable you will feel in fulfilling your responsibilities.
