This swimming trophy was transferred from the Student Union, Ultimo Campus and became part of the SI Heritage collection in late 2004. The sponsor, Lanock Motors, was a large Volkswagon dealership in Australia which traded between 1954 and 1991. During the 1960s, there were 8 Lanock dealerships in Sydney with agencies in Wollongong, Adelaide, Perth and Darwin. In the early 1960s, a pre-apprenticeship course in Automotive Mechanics was offered at Sydney Technical College. Pre-apprenticeship courses like this one were conducted by technical colleges in association with high schools under the jurisdiction of the NSW Dept. of Education. Sport was part of pre-apprenticeship courses. The Dept. of Technical Education handbook (1964) describes how these courses worked: "Instruction is given on a full-time day basis in the general subjects of English, Mathematics, Physics and Social Studies, and the trade subjects of Workshop Practice, Trade Calculations, Trade Theory and Trade Drawing appropriate to the course the lad wishes to follow. A minimum of 18 hours per week is spent on craft or trade instruction, the additional time of approximately 14 hours per week being spent on ... general studies, plus 2 hours weekly for athletic games and physical training, the latter group ... provided by ... secondary schools". Successful students were granted an exemption from 1 year of the relevant technical college trade course. .Source: Matthews, Phil (1991 Lanock Motors 1954 - 1991 [Internet].
