Statement of Significance

Ruby M. Melville was awarded an Honours grade pass in Millinery (full course of instruction) in December, 1913. She gained her certificate at Sydney Technical College. The certificate has the personal signature of James Nangle who was Superintendent of Technical Education in New South Wales between 1913 and 1933..
Ruby became a successful businesswoman who managed her own clothing factory in Epping from 1917 to 1966. (See entry TA215 for full details of her work).
Robert Stewart (Jewellers) Ltd., 75 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow began trading as Allan and Robert Stewart, Clock and Watchmakers in Glasgow in 1835. Robert Stewart took over the business and sold high quality jewellery. He was appointed goldsmith and silversmith to Queen Victoria between 1886 and 1896. It is possible that this badge was awarded to Ruby as an acknowledgement of her success in her Millinery examination.
