Statement of Significance

This poster was probably produced in 1990 to promote Fine Arts courses offered by TAFE NSW in 1991.The college locations listed in the poster closely match those listed in the "TAFE NSW handbook" (1991) with the exception of Goulburn. Information in this handbook was current at the time of publication - 17 August, 1990 so it's possible there was a late change in the college locations where the Associate Diploma was offered.
Associate Diploma of Arts (Fine Arts) offered a broad education in the visual arts with the opportunity to specialise in an area of fine arts. It was also a pathway to the Diploma course offered at East Sydney and Meadowbank colleges.
Diploma of Arts (Fine Arts) was offered at East Sydney and Meadowbank TAFE colleges. This course was based on the discipline of studio practice with students taught by practising artists. It sat uneasily within the vocationally based structure of TAFE NSW with its emerging emphasis on competency based training. This was particularly the case at the East Sydney campus.
In 1996 after a public campaign with broad support, the National Art School at East Sydney became an independent college within the NSW Dept. of Education. The Diploma of Arts (Fine Arts) course was replaced by a Bachelor of Fine Art course in 1998 with an Honours programme and a MFA by research programme offered in 2002.
